What walking Accra is actually like
Accra is flat near the sea and then rises gently inland, so the effort is rarely in the gradient. It is in the sun, the humidity and the state of the pavement. Long stretches of road have no continuous footway at all. You walk on the shoulder, step around open drains, cross where the traffic gives you a gap. It is a city that works on foot, but it does not make it easy for you, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest.
The street pattern is not one thing. Central Accra around Jamestown and Usshertown is old, tight and irregular, with lanes that thread between compounds down to the fishing harbour. Osu is closer to a rough grid, small blocks either side of Oxford Street, easy to comb through. Then there is the Ring Road system and the big arterials, Independence Avenue, Liberation Road, the Spintex corridor, which are long, hot and built for cars. Airport Residential and the Cantonments area are quieter, leafier, and go quickly.
A route that fills in a lot at once
Start early, before eight, when the air is still survivable. Begin at Independence Square by the Black Star Gate, then take the shore road west past Osu Castle and into Osu proper. Comb the small streets either side of Oxford Street rather than just walking the length of it, because side streets are where the fog actually clears in blocks rather than a thin line.
From Osu you can push north to the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park and the area around the National Museum, then decide whether to continue west into Jamestown along the coast. Jamestown is the most interesting walking in the city: the lighthouse, the lanes down to the beach, the boats. Give yourself time and do not rush it. That loop is a solid morning and it lights up a genuinely useful chunk of the central map.
Why the fog is stubborn here
Accra is sprawling. Greater Accra keeps growing outward through Tema, Madina, Adenta and East Legon, and those areas are laid out for vehicles. Filling those in on foot is slow work with very little visual reward per hour. The dense old core is the opposite. A few hours in Jamestown and Osu clears real area because the streets are short and close together.
So the honest strategy is to accept two speeds. The centre fills in fast and looks great. The outer city fills in as commuting stripes along whatever route you walk regularly. Both count. FOG shows a city percent for anywhere you have walked, and in a city as spread out as Accra that number climbs slowly. That is the city, not the app.
Heat is the real limiter. The harmattan months bring dust and haze, and the rains in May and June turn some streets into water. Morning and late afternoon are the walking windows. Midday is not a walking window.

Is Accra a walkable city?
In parts. Jamestown, Osu and the central government district are genuinely walkable. Much of the wider metro is not, with missing footways, open drains and heavy traffic on the arterials. Plan around that rather than assuming a continuous pavement.
When is the best time of day to walk?
Early morning is best, roughly six to nine. Late afternoon works too. Midday heat and humidity make long walks a bad idea most of the year.
Does FOG need a data connection while I walk?
It uses your phone's location, not a network connection, to record where you have been. Everything stays on the device. There is no account and no cloud sync.
Can I import walks I did before installing FOG?
Yes, with the paid unlock. FOG imports Google Timeline exports and GPX files, so past routes through Accra get revealed on the map.
Does FOG have Accra guides or routes built in?
