Walk Copenhagen and clear the fog

Copenhagen is flat, small enough to cross on foot and obsessive about bikes. Very few cities let you fill in the map this quickly.

A medieval core inside a ring of lakes

Indre By, the old centre, is a tangle: short crooked streets, small squares, and Stroget running east to west through the middle as one of the longest pedestrian streets in Europe. Around it sit the lakes, Sortedams, Peblinge and Sankt Jorgens, a curved chain of water on the line of the old fortifications that neatly separates the centre from Norrebro, Osterbro and Vesterbro.

That geometry is good news for fog clearing. The core is roughly a kilometre across, so a couple of unhurried hours takes it from fully fogged to almost solid. Nyhavn, Kongens Nytorv, Amalienborg, Rundetaarn, Gammeltorv and Nytorv all sit within walking distance of each other. Once the centre is done, the surrounding districts are regular enough to work through methodically.

The harbour splits it in two

Copenhagen sits on both sides of a working harbour, and getting between the banks used to mean a detour. Now the pedestrian and cycle bridges do the job: Inderhavnsbroen from Nyhavn to Christianshavn, Lille Langebro, Cirkelbroen with its circular platforms, and Bryggebroen further south. On the map each crossing shows as a thin cleared thread over the water linking two filled blocks.

Christianshavn is worth the crossing. It was laid out in the seventeenth century with canals down the middle of the streets, so the pattern there is neat and Dutch. Walk Overgaden Neden Vandet along the canal, carry on into Christiania, then cross back to Islands Brygge on the other bank and head north along the harbourfront promenade. That loop is around seven kilometres, entirely flat, and it clears a satisfying ring.

Bikes, and what they do to your map

Copenhagen has more bikes than cars and separate cycle tracks on nearly every arterial. FOG works for walking, running and riding, so a commute across Dronning Louises Bro clears exactly the same ground it would on foot, just faster. If you ride here, expect the map to open up much quicker than in a city where you would be walking everything.

The distances help too. Norrebro, Vesterbro, Osterbro and Frederiksberg all sit within a few kilometres of the centre. Frederiksberg is technically its own municipality, an enclave inside Copenhagen, with the long straight Frederiksberg Alle and the big park at Frederiksberg Have. Amager stretches south and is far more spread out, with Amager Faelled and the beach and dunes at Amager Strandpark.

Weather and honest expectations

The real limit is not terrain, it is daylight and rain. In December the sun is up for about seven hours and it is often grey and wet. Danes walk and ride anyway, and so can you, but the productive months are the long light ones: May through September gives you evenings that stretch past ten. Nothing here is steep, so the walking itself is never hard.

The buildings are low and the streets are wide enough that GPS behaves. There is no downtown canyon to confuse a trace. FOG keeps revealing with the app closed and the screen off, so put the phone in a pocket and ride to work. Copenhagen also gets a city percentage, and because the built city is compact, that number climbs faster than it does almost anywhere else.
