FOG vs Stomped

Stomped and FOG both hide the world under fog and make you walk it off. If you are looking for a Stomped app alternative, the real differences are platforms, accounts, and whether your past walks can come with you.

The short answer

Both apps do the same core thing. The map starts dark. You clear it by physically going somewhere. What separates them is everything around that.

• Pick Stomped if you are on an iPhone and you want the social side. Its App Store listing advertises streaks, achievements, friends and leaderboards.
• Pick FOG if you want Android as well as iPhone, no account at all, nothing leaving the phone, and the option to import years of past walks so the map is not empty on day one.

Neither choice is wrong. They are built on different bets about what a fog map is for. Stomped bets on comparing your ground against other people. FOG bets on a private record that is only yours.

What Stomped is, from its own listing

These are details published by Stomped itself, checked in August 2026 on stomped.app and on the App Store listing for "Stomped: Unlock Your City" by Patrick Yancey. Apps change, so confirm anything that matters to you against their current listing before deciding.

• It covers your map in fog and clears it permanently as you walk, run, bike or roll.
• Coverage is measured in hexagonal tiles, and the site describes neighbourhood and city completion percentages.
• The listing names distance and routes, streaks and achievements, and friends plus leaderboards.
• It is listed as free on the App Store, with no in-app purchases shown at the time we checked.
• It is an iPhone app. Compatibility also covers Macs with Apple silicon and Apple Vision. The Stomped site offers an Android waitlist rather than an Android release.
• The site describes an optional passive tile capture setting that is off by default, and says the tiles are coarse enough that the app only has to know which one you are in.
• The site has a sign in link, and the App Store privacy label lists email address, user ID and device ID among data linked to you, with analytics as one stated use.
• The App Store notes the app may use your location when it is not open, which can reduce battery life.

We could not verify from Stomped's own pages whether it imports past location history, whether it exports your data, or whether an account is required to use the map. Check their current listing for those.

What FOG is

FOG is a fog of war walking map from Maren Technologies, on iPhone and Android. The whole world map starts hidden. Every street you physically walk is revealed permanently. It keeps revealing with the app closed and the screen off, and it works for walking, running and riding, anywhere on Earth.

There is no account and no sign-up. No cloud, no analytics, no ads, no tracking. The map never leaves the phone, and you can export your data at any time. Nobody, including us, can see where you have been.

FOG is free to explore. One purchase of USD 5.99 unlocks unlimited ranks, every character, and history import. There is no subscription and there never will be. The paid unlock reads Google Timeline exports and GPX files, so years of past walks appear on the map immediately instead of starting from nothing.

Beyond the fog itself, FOG counts what you have stood in: 241 countries, 3,390 regions and 7,342 named places, collected only by physically being there. Ranks climb with the area you have covered, from Wanderer to Scout, Pathfinder, Explorer and Voyager. For any city you have walked, it shows the percentage of that city you have lit up.

Who should pick Stomped

Stomped is the better fit if any of these are true for you.

• You want to race people. Friends and leaderboards are a headline feature there, and they are not in FOG at all.
• Streaks and achievements are the thing that gets you out of the door.
• You are on an iPhone, and you also want it on an Apple silicon Mac or Apple Vision.
• You would rather pay nothing and are comfortable with an account and analytics in exchange.

If that is you, install Stomped. A comparison page that pretends there is only one right answer is not worth reading.

Who should pick FOG

FOG is the better fit if any of these are true.

• You are on Android, or you and the people you walk with are split across both platforms.
• You do not want a location app with an account, a server or analytics. FOG has none of those. The map stays on the phone and you can export it.
• You already have years of walks in Google Timeline or in GPX files and want them on the map on day one rather than starting from a blank city. See importing Google Timeline.

• You care about the collection: countries, regions and named places you have physically stood in, not only tiles.

If you switch, what carries over

FOG cannot read another app's fog map, and as far as we know none of these apps can read each other's. What FOG can read is the location history underneath. If your walks are in Google Timeline, export them and import the file. If you have GPX tracks from a watch or another tracker, import those. The fog lifts everywhere the data says you went, which usually means the map looks like months or years of walking within a minute of installing.

If you have nothing to import, both apps start you in the same place: a dark map and a front door. FOG is free to explore until you want the ranks, the characters and the import, so you can walk for a week and see whether the habit sticks before paying anything.
