A small core inside a ring
Munich's old town is a circle roughly a kilometre across, held inside the Altstadtring where the city walls used to be. Three of the old gates survive: Sendlinger Tor, Karlstor at Stachus, and Isartor. Between them the lanes run short and irregular, feeding into Marienplatz and the Viktualienmarkt. There are no hills to speak of, the pavements are wide and even, and the whole thing is small enough that you can clear most of it in one long afternoon.
Outside the ring the character changes but the walking stays good. Maxvorstadt is a proper grid of nineteenth century blocks around Ludwigstrasse. Schwabing runs north from it. Haidhausen and the Glockenbachviertel are quieter and tighter, and Lehel sits between the old town and the river.
The loop that lights the most map
Come in at Sendlinger Tor, walk the lanes to Marienplatz, then straight up Theatinerstrasse to Odeonsplatz and through the Hofgarten. From there you are already at the bottom of the Englischer Garten. Follow the paths past the Monopteros and the Eisbach surfers up to the Kleinhesseloher See, which is about three kilometres of park on its own.
Cut east out of the park to the Isar, cross at one of the footbridges and take the gravel banks south. The river path runs all the way past the Deutsches Museum and on to the Flaucher. Come back into town at the Gärtnerplatz and finish along Sendlinger Strasse. That is a full circuit of the centre, all of it flat, and it draws a clean shape on the map.
Why the fog behaves here
Munich is one of the easier European cities to actually complete. The centre is compact, the ground is flat, and the pavements are continuous, so daily distance goes further than it does in a hilly or broken city. Buildings are mostly five or six storeys, which means the signal stays honest and your lines land where you walked them.
The trade is that the reward slows down once the middle is done. The outer districts are calm, regular and repetitive, and the S-Bahn suburbs are spread far enough apart that you have to go out there deliberately. Winter is cold but not disabling, and the city grits properly. The Englischer Garten is the one place where you can walk for an hour and still find paths you have not lit.
